In a news release published by Texas A&M University, Dr. R. Bowen Loftin announced his plans to resign as President in the beginning of next year.

In a statement published by the Houston Chronicle, Loftin said, “my greatest joy has always been found in our students, That being said, I do miss the opportunity to teach and do research – activities that have characterized my long career in higher education.”

Loftin will officially resign in January of 2014. He will serve as a tenured professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the Dwight Look College of Engineering, according to the university news release.

Dr. R. Bowen Loftin was named interim president in June of 2009. Prior to this position, he served as the Vice President of Texas A&M University at Galveston. He was named President of Texas A&M University in February 2010. Since then, the university has enrolled a record number of students and has increasingly grown in research, academics, and overall student population.

An alumnus of the university, Loftin was part of the Texas A&M graduating class of 1970 with a degree in physics.

As the 24th president of Texas A&M University, Dr. Loftin has been involved in both industry and government yet stays especially involved with “his” students. He can easily be reached through phone, email, and social media or even often seen attending campus events such as MSC Open House and Midnight Yells.
